The Power Take-Off is often referred to by its acronym, PTO. This mechanical device is a common type of power delivery in today's mobile machine field. PTO also transfers high power and torque from the engine usually through the transmission of vehicles like trucks and tractors.
Mobile machine market has three common power take-off methods which are made available by PTO gearbox suppliers and PTO gearbox distributors. These are tractor style, truck transmission style and engine crankshaft-driven. However, the latter is not usually referred to as a PTO. The crankshaft-driven process of power transmission is usually utilized for the functioning of hydraulic pumps. These pumps are mounted to the front of an on-highway truck like a plow/spreader or cement mixer.
In order to turn the lump, there is a small shaft with U-joints attached to a yoke coupler. This configuration of the drive is not usually called as a PTO. The tractor PTO goes back to the olden times when tractors were used. These were early PTOs made by PTO gearbox manufacturers that were driven by the transmission which was situated at the back of the tractor. It allows for a convenient position for an output shaft.
A transmission clutch is usually used by a live PTO in two stages. In the first stage, the clutch will operate the driven portion of the transmission. In the second stage, the clutch will further control the engagement of the PTO. This process allows independent control of the transmission, ensuring that the PTO maintains operation no matter of the transmission clutch activity.
A PTO Gearbox manufacturer makes some general kinds of gearboxes. These include planetary, spur/helical gear and worm gear. A planetary drive is the most common kind of gearbox for mobile and off-highway machinery. It consists of a center “sun” gear that further has three or more circumferential “planet” gears. These gears, in turn, are enveloped by a ring gear. Planetary gearboxes are very robust. Therefore, they are generally found in wheel drive applications.?
Spur style gearboxes utilize two or more gears meshed side by side. They are often used in industrial applications like a rolling mill. Their size and gear ratios differ greatly. The upper end of torque capacity is solely limited by the size of gears. These kinds of gearboxes have input and output shafts on the same or opposite sides.
Worm gear style gearboxes are also very popular. They use a helical axial input shaft that applies force across a perpendicular gear ring which is attached to the output shaft. Operation always occurs with input and output at a 90° angle from each other. Worm gear units are usually light to medium duty.
A Gearbox is made available by a PTO gearbox supplier or a PTO gearbox distributor and it is applied to increase torque or speed. Remember that increasing one decreases the other. When utilized to enhance speed, sometimes planetary or helical (spur) gearboxes are put to use in reverse direction. Overdriven gearboxes are for pump drives. A speed-increasing gearbox or pump mount could be used for a smaller pump.
PTO with a single gear to mesh with the transmission’s output gear is the simplest form. These types are more economical due to their simplicity but restricted in their speed and horsepower range. The more common ones are PTOs with two or three gears. These are utilized for heavy-duty applications that need high horsepower, torque and speed. Multiple gears ensure a high range of speed or torque multiplication.
